Both estrogen and progesterone levels increase during this period. This has a negative feedback inhibitory and strengthening effect on the hypothalamus and adenohypophysis, thus reducing the levels of ovulation-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone, leading to the degeneration of the corpus luteum, and then the levels of estrogen and progesterone are reduced. The endometrium loses the support of these two hormones and peels off and bleeds, which is when menstruation occurs.
