The Heart Sutra is one of Japan’s most beloved Buddhist texts.
Its 262 characters¹ distill the vast teachings of the Mahayana classic Prajñāpāramitā (over 600 volumes) into a single, resonant chant.
Translated from Sanskrit into Chinese by Xuanzang in the 7th century, the sutra’s final mantra—“Gate Gate…”—is a phonetic transcription of sacred sounds, adding to its mystical allure.
