How to Play Dots and Boxes Games:

Step 1: To understand the rules, be aware of the game's goal. The concept of the simple game "dots and boxes" is to "possess" the most boxes at the finish of play. You and your opponent take turns drawing horizontal or vertical lines to connect the boxes. You must write your initial within the box to win it when someone draws a line that completes it. Once all the dots are in place, you can count up the boxes and see who wins.

Step 2: Draw one horizontal or vertical line every turn to connect two dots. As there are not enough lines to win any boxes in the early going, this will be mostly random. Each line simply connects one dot to its neighboring dot, whether they are above, below, left, or right. There aren't any diagonals.
